These are a few ways to safely redact info, but please verify for yourself.
🔧 Steps:
Open the PDF in Kami:
Navigate to Kami.
Click on "Open from Computer" or "Open from Google Drive" to upload your one-page PDF.
Redact the Address:
In the left-hand toolbar, select the "Drawing" tool.
Choose a solid color (e.g., black) and adjust the thickness to cover the address completely.
Draw over the address to obscure it.
Flatten the Annotations:
Click on the "Download" icon in the upper-right corner.
In the download options, select "Flatten Annotations".
Click "Begin Export" to download the redacted PDF.
Flattening the annotations embeds them into the PDF, making the redacted information unselectable and uncopyable. (I have been seeing a lot of Kami redactions that skip this.)
The obscured text becomes part of the document's image, preventing any text extraction tools from accessing it.
Tools Needed:
A free web tool like PDFescape (no download). You can select another.
Go to PDFescape.com and choose “Free Online.”
Upload your one-page PDF.
Use the “Whiteout” tool (under "Insert") to draw a white box over the address.
(Optional) Use the “Text” tool to type [REDACTED] or leave it blank.
Click the “Save & Download PDF” button (green arrow icon).
The whiteout is embedded into the PDF, so the covered text cannot be selected or copied.
PDFescape flattens the edits when you download it, removing the underlying text.
Note:" Simply drawing over text in a photo does not remove the underlying text data. Live Text can still recognize and extract this information. Therefore, converting the redacted image into a new PDF, as outlined above, is crucial for ensuring the text cannot be copied or recovered.
To ensure that redacted information, such as an address, cannot be recovered or copied from a PDF using an iPhone, follow these steps:
Open the PDF: Use the Files app or a PDF viewer to open the one-page PDF.
Take a Screenshot:
Press the Side Button and Volume Up button simultaneously.
Tap the screenshot preview that appears in the bottom-left corner.
Use Markup to Redact:
In the Markup interface, use the rectangle tool to draw a solid black box over the address.
Ensure the box completely covers the text.
Save the Image:
Tap Done, then select Save to Photos.
Convert the Image to PDF:
Open the Photos app and select the redacted image.
Tap the Share icon and choose Print.
In the Printer Options, use a two-finger outward pinch gesture on the preview image to open it in full screen.
Tap the Share icon again and select Save to Files to save it as a PDF.
Import the PDF into Canva:
Open Canva and click on "Create a Design" > "Import File".
Upload your one-page PDF.
Once uploaded, it will appear in your Recent Designs; click to open it.
Redact the Address:
In the editor, navigate to the Elements tab.
Select the square shape under the "Shapes" section.
Drag the square over the address you wish to redact.
Adjust the size to fully cover the text.
Change the square's color to black (or another solid color) to obscure the text.
Flatten and Download the PDF:
Click on the "Share" button in the top right corner.
Select "Download".
Choose "PDF Standard" as the file type.
Ensure the "Flatten PDF" option is checked.
Click "Download" to save the redacted PDF to your device.
Flattening the PDF merges all elements into a single layer, preventing the extraction or selection of underlying text.
