Second Step Program

During classroom guidance lessons, we will be using the research-based Second Step Violence Prevention Program. This program uses engaging lessons and activities to help kids learn important social skills such as managing feelings, empathy, impulse control, problem solving, and cooperation. Research tells us that children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with others and do better in school.

Incorporating photographs and videos of children in everyday situations, Second Step lessons introduce and teach all of the above skills using discussions, games, songs, and other activities. All students are given the chance to practice the skills they are learning through role-playing, an important part of Second Step lessons.

Through the 'Home Links', we will be including information about the skills that are being covered during classroom guidance as part of the Second Step program. The 'Home Links' will also include ideas on how to support your child at home to help him or her understand and practice the new skills.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this program or what skills your child is practicing during classroom guidance.
