Welcome! The Language A1 program is primarily a pre-university course in language and literature divided among four semesters over two years. In this course, students will study the rhetorical effects of language across various text types and the literature of a variety of cultures across a range of periods, genres, styles, and contexts. They will perform close readings and annotate their texts so that they can effectively analyze, interpret, and evaluate the pieces under consideration using textual evidence to support their points through discussion and writing. The expectation is that students will independently apply the strategies which are practiced in the course when they encounter new works and consider their audiences and purposes as they communicate their findings to others. Students will not only be encouraged to react on a personal level to a variety of texts, but they will also be asked to offer criticism relative to structure, technique, and style and to compare texts of various types, including fiction and non-fiction, and in written, visual and multimedia forms.English Language and Literature covers three areas of study (Readers, Writer, and Texts; Time and Space; and Intertextuality) and seven concepts (Identity, Culture, Creativity, Communication, Perspective, Transformation, and Representation) and prepares students for university level study.
Summer reading and analysis is required in the IB English course.
