AP Language and Composition is an argument and rhetoric course that culminates with the AP test in May. This may, depending on a student's score and college choice, result in advanced placement into composition or English classes or in credit being granted for the class. It is rigorous and challenging, for it is the equivalent of a college composition class.
This is first and foremost a writing course based on the analysis and synthesis of argument. The class focuses on non-fiction reading and writing, where students will analyze the rhetorical situation, including techniques and appeals of persuasion for their effect on readers. Students then work on implementing these techniques in their writing with an emphasis on fluency, clarity, and strength. Students become not only critical readers but also critical writers who communicate with purpose.
The attached syllabus is an example of the kinds of activities and writing in which the class will engage. I switch out readings to keep the work topical and to meet the needs of the students in front of me.
