In this model gifted learners are offered a customized curriculum that includes three essential elements:
1) Advanced Content
2) Higher Level Processes and Product Development
3) Interdisciplinary Concepts, Issues and Themes
Using the Integrated Curriculum Model students are able to make meaningful connections and deepen their understanding of a concept. Providing students with advanced content within a given subject area provides opportunities for new learning. Because gifted learners have complex thinking capacities, the provision of a curriculum that helps gifted students reason through situations and think critically about subject matter enhances engagement and creative production. Moreover, because many gifted students thrive on making connections, the focus on overarching issues, themes, and concepts elevates their understanding of the real world and how it works.
Advanced content includes in-depth lessons, advanced reading, access to primary sources, and encouragement of advanced skills.
Higher level processes include research, problem-based learning, inquiry skills and elements of reasoning.
The interdisciplinary concepts include cause and effect, patterns, change and systems.
