Week 1 - Gear Trains 10/28- 11/1

  1. Monday - Build gear train in class
  2. Tuesday- Continue discussion on gear train
    1. Homework - Reading on gears and gear ratios
  3. Wednesday - Gears Virtual Lab
    1. The lab is due at the start of class Friday
  4. Thursday- Continue working on the Gears Virtual Lab
  5. Friday- Types of gear/gear trains
    1. Driver Gear - This is the input gear where the energy is put into the gear train
    2. Idler Gears- These are gears placed in a train to fill a space and change the direction of a gear trains rotation.
      1. These do not affect the total gear train
    3. Driven Gear- This is the output gear, this is the gear where the output torque is applied to an axle to accomplish a task
    4. Compound gear- two gears that share an axle. They rotate at the same rate, but often have different diameters to give the train a mechanical advantage. This separates your gear train into two separate gear trains.
    5. quiz
    6. Homework- Homework - Reading on gears and gear ratios

Week 2- Gears and chain and sprocket 11/4- 11/8

  1. Monday- Introductory notes for working with a gear train
    1. Basic Equation for a gear
    2. What is Torque? How do we use it?
    3. Homework - Worksheet 1 - Gear trains

Goeldi is sick today - Get the notes under today's date

  1. Tuesday-Go over the homework about basic gear trains. Introduce the idea of the compound gear
    1. Answer Key to worksheet 1
    2. Notes on compound gears and work for problem one on the homework
      1. The gears generator can help you make sure you are doing it right
        1. Link to generator
    3. Homework - worksheet 2
  2. Wednesday - Go over the homework for the compound gear train
  3. Thursday- Quiz on Gear trains/Compound gear trains
    1. Time after the quiz should be spent working on the homework

  3. Wednesday-Discuss the review packet
  4. Thursday- Test on gears
  5. Friday-Survey on gears unit

Week 4- Gears Project 11/18-11/22

Project goal - You need to design a conveyor belt that can move a pay load 12 inches in two directions, meaning it has to transfer from one belt to the next. It can only have one handle that you turn to get everything moving.

BONUS POINTS- If you can get your belt two move 12 inches in three directions (forward/backward, left/right, up)

Project goal 2- You are building a draw bridge that opens and closes. The bridge needs to use a compound gear system to help you lift the bridge.

BONUS POINTS - If you can get both sides of your bridge to go up and stay locked in place. You are only allowed to touch the bridge at one point, so you need to figure out a way how you can lock it in place. However, you may touch the bridge a second time to unlock it to return to its starting height.

Both projects are 20 points projects based on the success of the machine. Meaning that it meets the goal repetitively

Requirements for your presentation

    • Title slide introducing your group and project
    • What inspired you to come up with the design you did?
    • Daily pictures of the progress of your groups building
    • What were some of the challenges your group faced?
    • Is the machine successful in your eyes?

  1. Monday - Work on Project
