Voices of Recovery

Mr. Lewis and his brother are seen here receiving a brand new donated mattress from the Robeson County Disaster Recovery Committee.  The Lewis family lost everything due to Hurricane Matthew.  Mr. Lewis and his wife Carolyn had over $17,000 worth of damage due to the disaster and had to leave their home of 22 years in West Lumberton, which was destroyed due to flooding.  The Lewis family came to Robeson County Disaster Recovery Committee(RCDRC) for assistance and was connected to a disaster case manager, Kathy Buie pictured above.   Since Hurricane Matthew's devastation, the Lewis family are now back in their house with only a few minor repairs to go and awaiting elevation of their now reconstructed home.  Mrs. Lewis says that “FEMA helped but it was the Almighty that saw us through”.  With the assistance of a disaster case manager, the Lewis family are a little closer to what they once knew as home. “RCDRC helped us tremendously, says Mrs. Lewis.  I cannot say enough about what you have done for my family.  The storm was bad, but I saw a lot of good come from it and that was the community coming together and helping one another. God allowed this storm to bring us closer together and clean up some things in this community”.
