IU Groups Scholars Program

The IU Groups Scholars Program provides support for students who are traditionally underrepresented in college—students who are “first generation” (meaning neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) and/or students with limited financial resources.

IU Groups Scholars students participate in the free Summer Experience Program (SEP) during the summer immediately following high school graduation. During SEP, students take college courses and participate in a wide variety of activities to help them transition to the college environment. Following SEP, students are provided with professional and peer advising and tutoring, financial assistance and counseling, etc. They are encouraged to become leaders on campus and participate in a variety of programs, including overseas study.

Students interested in STEM-related majors (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) who are accepted into the Groups Scholars Program can apply for the STEM Initiative which provides opportunities for gaining first-hand knowledge and experience in research labs with IU professors. (See more details below.)

The Groups Scholars program provides financial aid for the full cost of SEP and works in combination with other need-based aid to cover four years of college (funding covers student’s need which is determined by FAFSA). Many Groups students also qualify for additional federal and state financial assistance.
