Water Surface Tension
Materials:
· Cup or bowl of water
· Pinch of pepper
· Dishwashing soap
Instructions:
1. Sprinkle a pinch of pepper on the water.
2. Notice how the pepper floats on the water.
3. Put liquid soap on your pointer finger.
4. Dip your finger into the water.
What happens to the pepper?
Why?
Water has a kind of skin that is called surface tension. The pepper floats because it is not heavy enough to break through the skin. Soap breaks the water’s skin and moves the pepper.
When you wash your hands, soap allows oil and bacteria to be pulled away from your skin and washed down the drain.
