Fair Testing

Scientific Fair Testing

Problem: My Paper plane does not fly far in a straight line.(define far)

Procedure: Test my plane by flying it in a controlled atmosphere. (variable/s)

Result: The average distance my plane flew in a straight was three and one half metres.

My hypothesis: If I change the shape of my plane wings it will then fly further. (personal)

Result: The average distance my plane flew in a straight was five and one two-thirds metres.

My hypothesis: If a paper-clip is placed on the nose of the plane it will then fly further. (neutral)

17/06/11 Biggest Bubble Test

Testable Question: How can a person reliably produce the biggest bubblegum bubble possible?

Hypothesis: If we design a machine to replicate a persons exhalation then we can reliably produce bubbles from bubble gum.

What is wrong with this hypothesis?

Background: Chad Fell (USA) blew a bubblegum bubble with a diameter of 50.8 cm without using his hands at the Double Springs High School, Winston County, Alabama, USA on 24 April 2004. http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/Search/Details/Largest-bubblegum-bubble-blown/60815.htm (Accessed 17/06/11)

Observations:

  • Size of bubble, no bubble,

  • Measure bubbles with ruler - height and length

  1. Small - 0-2cm high, 0-2cm long

  2. Medium - 2.1cm-4.0cm high, 2.1cm-4.0cm long

  3. Large - 4.1cm-8.0cm high, 4.1-8.0cm long
