Term One

STATISTICS

We are learning about number and other maths concepts with classroom activities and through such online programs as 'Xtramath' and 'Maths Whizz'. To begin this term we will also look at statistics, in particular through a focus around our health.

Below are a couple of activities* and hyperlinks that will help give you a better understanding of 'STATISTICS"

*Thanks to BBC Maths for permission to use these gadgets.

1. HERE is an activity to refresh your memory about statistics and handling data. Give it a go! Look for the 'HELP' button if you get stuck :-)

(Sometimes the game can be slow loading fully, be patient.)

2. CLICK here to find out more about handling data.

3. Research the meanings of the words in the table below. Then make a copy of the table in your'...... Maths 2012' doc. then write what the word means in Maths (especially relating to statistics). Include a graphic to help your understanding.

4. INTERPRETING data and presenting it so that the data can be more easily understood is an important part of statistical investigations. Often statisticians (stat-es-tish-uns) use 'average' as a measure. Believe it or not, there are three types of 'average' - MEAN, MEDIAN & MODE .

See if you can figure out which average is which in the activity below. Look for the 'HELP' button if you get stuck :-)

(Sometimes the game can be slow loading fully, be patient.)

5. CLICK here to find out more about mean, medium and mode as well as the concept of RANGE.

6. Check your statistical knowledge so far here. Answer the questions in your '........ Maths 2012' doc. Make sure to put today's date, the answers are for each separate activity and that your work is neatly and clearly set-out.

7. Follow the link to test your 'interpreting data' skills. The series of questions looks at weather. Take a screenshot at the end, attach it to an email, and send it to Mr Harris. Click here for the link.
