Writing Paragraphs
What is a Paragraph?
A collection of related sentences, dealing with one topic.
A paragraph has
A Topic sentence
Supporting sentences
Concluding sentences
Topic Sentence
Usually the first sentence
Expresses main idea
Most general sentence
Example: There are three reasons why Miss King has the best class.
Supporting Sentences
Develops, explains and supports the topic sentence
Have facts, details and examples
Explains why the main idea is true
Example: First, the kids in Miss King’s class are very nice. Second, the students work very hard and have fun doing it.Finally Miss King leaves school everyday with a big smile.
Concluding Sentence
Usually the last sentence
Relates to the main idea
Either finishes the paragraph or gets ready for the next.
Example: Since Miss King’s class are so amazing, she has been able to do some really great learning with them.
So make sure that your paragraph has:
A Topic sentence
Supporting sentences
A Concluding sentence
Variety of sentence types – simple, complex, questions or statements.
Variety of sentence beginnings
Cool topic words
Correct punctuation
