What is math counts?
The mission of MATHCOUNTS® is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. With the generous support of all MATHCOUNTS sponsors and volunteers, and leadership of the National Society of Professional Engineers at the local and state levels, MATHCOUNTS is providing today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering or mathematics careers.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory.
Currently celebrating our 30th anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students. Former Presidents Bush, Clinton, Bush and Reagan have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in White House ceremonies. The MATHCOUNTS program has also received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Particularly exciting for our Mathletes® were the hour-long ESPN programs on the National Competition.

Hosford MathCounts FAQ Sheet
Who may participate in MathCounts?
Students in grades sixth and eight are eligible to compete in MathCounts.
When and where does MathCounts meet?
We meet in Mr. Meyers room #205 on Friday's from 8:00 to 9:00 every week from late September until the Regional Competition in February. (Basically the Fall and Winter sessions of the HEAT program).
What happens at the school meetings?
We share food and drink, do lots of cool math problems, learn new problem solving strategies, make new friends, and practice fast, accurate thinking and teamwork.
How and when can I join?
Sign up through the HEAT program, link found here. Registration. You can sign up for either the Fall, Winter or both sessions.
Why is there a cost to the program?
The cost is for the room rental, fees for the competition, as well as the T-Shirts that we have each year. If there is any left I usually try to get different treats for the students when they show up so early in the morning.
What is the highlight of the MathCounts year?
This would be the Regional Competition held at Mentor Graphic in Willsonville every February where we compete against approximately 10 other middle schools from Multnomah County. In 2016 we took 4th place.
How many students will go to Regionals?
Only a handful of students will represent Hosford. The team is 8 players, 4 that make up a team for the rounds and 4 individual competitors.
How are these students chosen?
Every year in December, interested students participate in the MathCounts School Competition, culminating with the crowning of the school champion. Doing well on this test is important, but Mr. Meyers weighs other factors including attendance, teamwork, and level of the math course currently being taken by the student. Perhaps the most important factor is the ability to represent Hosford well.
How is this competition structured?
Individually, students will do 30 problems in 40 minutes (no calculators), then 8 tougher problems in 24 minutes (calculators), and then in teams of four they will do 10 problems in 20 minutes (calculators).
