We aim to continue to support your child’s learning.
This guide has been prepared to support you and your child to engage in learning activities at home.
· Class Teachers will issue all pupils with materials including jotters to record any written work in and some reading material.
· All pupils P3-P7 should undertake a personal project to help support literacy skills. Staff will have discussed this with them and this can be completed using Google docs/slides or as a poster, leaflet or written project.
· Links for websites to support learning are included at the end of this page.
· Within school, pupils use an online Google Classroom, set up by their teacher to complete tasks. You will receive a note of your child’s Our Cloud Log in details and password so that they can access their Google Classroom from home. This can be done from any device by logging onto www.ourcloud.buzz and then clicking on log in (an information sheet can be found in the file below).
You would then click on the Google Classroom icon to find learning tasks posted by the teacher. Children may need to access Google Docs or Google Slides and these can be accessed by clicking on the Google Drive Icon.
Please note Primary 1 and 2 are not as familiar with this and will require more support to find and access their Google Classroom.
· Class teachers will update Google Classroom with learning tasks and suggested activities on a regular basis. Pupils should share completed tasks electronically with their teacher where possible. Staff will then be able to access pupil work and provide feedback.
· Usernames and passwords for any online resources used by your child in school will be shared with you.
· All pupils will be issued with a username and password for Study Ladder which is attached to the Our Cloud information leaflet.
· Try to establish a daily routine with your child and share your expectations of them. This will help them develop good habits and ensure some time is allocated to accessing and engaging in learning activities.
· Encourage your child to spend time reading each day. All pupils will be issued with a novel or reading book initially, however if schools remain closed pupils should be encouraged to read their own books, comics, newspapers, online stories etc. See www.getepic.com for further reading material.
· Help your child to practise and learn their times tables and addition and subtraction facts.
· Develop numeracy skills through activities such as cooking, baking and helping around the house, giving them opportunities to count, measure, tell the time, work out duration of time.
· For infants - Set your children challenges eg, how many spoons are in the drawer? Pair the clean socks – how many pairs? How many socks? Use everyday items such as clothes pegs, buttons, toys for children to count, sort and share. Use a baking tin with some flour/sugar etc and ask children to practise writing letters, words and numbers.
· Encourage your child to write on a daily basis – shopping lists, diary, stories, words etc
· Develop listening and talking skills by talking to your child, discussing stories read, news items and playing together. Board games can also help develop social skills.
· Develop problem solving skills – through everyday activities such as sudoku, crosswords etc
· www.gonoodle.com/for-families is a free website that encourages exercise and movement in a fun way. Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage to access the videos.
If you are looking at websites etc to try and provide extra activities/support for your child, as a guide, children in Scotland work on A Curriculum for Excellence. The levels are defined as follows, however it should be noted that every child works through this at their own pace.
Early Level – Nursery and Primary 1 for most pupils
First Level – Primary 2, 3 and 4 for most pupils
Second Level – Primary 5, 6 and 7 for most pupils
Many online activities refer to Reception to Year 6 or Key Stage 1 and 2 – these materials are written to match the English Curriculum however as a rough guide:
Reception- Primary 1 Year 3 – Primary 4 Year 6 – Primary 7
Year 1- Primary 2 Year 4 – Primary 5 Key Stage 1 – P1-3
Year 2, Primary 3 Year 5 – Primary 6 Key Stage 2 – P4-7
· We will continue to communicate with you through our text system and our School Website – accessed through West Dunbartonshire School page (type Saint Kessog’s into your browser and select the WDC page).
· Pupils will be able to contact their class teacher via Our Cloud e-mail.
· If you require to speak with Mrs McGowan, Mrs McHugh or Mrs Priestly, you can contact us by emailing the school office at schooloffice.stkessogs@west-dunbarton.gov.uk
