What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a unique program available to Grade 11 and 12 students in Ontario high schools. It allows students to focus on a career path that matches their interests and talents while meeting the requirements for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Whether you’re aiming for university, college, an apprenticeship, or straight into the workplace, SHSM gives you the opportunity to gain industry-relevant skills and certifications, making you stand out in the next phase of your journey.

How Does SHSM Work?

Students enrolled in an SHSM program complete a specific bundle of 8-10 courses tailored to their chosen field, along with:

• Certifications: Gain valuable industry certifications such as First Aid, CPR, and sector-specific training.

• Experiential Learning: Participate in co-op placements, job shadowing, and hands-on projects that give real-world experience.

• Reach Ahead Opportunities: Explore post-secondary options through university visits, apprenticeship workshops, and networking with industry professionals.

• Career Exploration: Develop skills and connections that directly apply to your future goals.

Upon completion, students earn the SHSM Seal on their diploma, which is recognized by colleges, universities, and employers across Ontario.
