OVERVIEW
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
It is the aim of the Grade 10 Academic Level French course to develop knowledge and skills to enable students to:
• communicate effectively
• analyze and appreciate what they read
• think logically
• understand French language and culture
• express their ideas clearly
Course Content
With the help of and within the following units, students will learn new vocabulary, grammar concepts, and cultural references. The textbook units will be supplemented by a variety of media resources to demonstrate French used in authentic situations.
In addition to these textbook units, students will read “Le Petit Nicolas”, a collection of short stories.
ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
70% Formative Evaluation (term work)
Throughout the semester, students will be evaluated according to the following 4 strands; Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Evaluations may include tests, quizzes, oral presentations, role play, communicative activities, reading comprehension activities, compositions, and listening comprehension activities.
30% Summative Evaluation
Towards the end of the semester, students will be asked to complete summative tasks that evaluate
the 4 strands, giving the students an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in the course.
MISSING A TEST
• If you know ahead of time that you will be away for a test or presentation (e.g., school sports, doctor’s appointment), please talk to your teacher before the date to make alternative arrangements.
LATES TO CLASS
Students are expected to be punctual.
ABSENCES FROM CLASS
The student is responsible for catching up on class work and completing any assignments given out during an absence.
TEXTBOOK INFO
A copy of the textbook, Voyages I , will be assigned to you.. A student who damages or loses his/her textbook is responsible to pay for its replacement. The student may also purchase a workbook for $20 which offers additional activities that go hand in hand with the units in the textbook. The workbook belongs to the student, and is brought to class each day.
