Shawn Han is a fourth-year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo majoring in Bachelor in Computer Science, Data Science. Shawn's academic study intersects computer science, statistics and machine learning. His research interests focus on topics in computer vision, including object detection, semantic segmentation, image matting and landmark detection. He is currently a machine learning researcher at University Health Networks working on nodule segmentation of volumetric lung CT images using deep learning techniques.

Join Mathletes on Thursday, Jan 14 from 3:15-4:00pm to hear from Dr. Dan Reed, an oceanographic data scientist who has worked in many places around the world from England, Netherland, the US, and Canada. Dr. Reed received his PhD in Oceanography from Dalhousie University in Canada and has a Bachelor of Engineering in Mathematical Engineering from Loughborough University in England. At the presentation, Dr. Reed will discuss how oceanographers use math and will also describe a variety of issues and topics related to his job. We hope to see you online this Thursday at 3:15!

Thanks to our ldhss Mathletes social media team for putting together the form and post for our upcoming virtual Math tutoring Mentorship Workshop this coming Thursday, November 5th starting at 3:15pm. This workshop is designed to help math tutors, experienced and new ones, improve their math explanation skills. It's open to all students considering to potentially become math tutors in the future, at zero cost to you, and we will be sharing some of our best tips for tutoring and exploring math through different lens. Open to all students grade 7 to 12. No sign-up required - No skills required. Just come and have fun exploring math problem solving questions together! Mathletes gave some super challenging math problems that helped improve everyone's critical thinking skills.
These workshops are for all students who enjoy team math problem solving and collaboration with students from all grades.
All grades 7 to 12 students work together to see different ways of presenting the solutions to enrichment questions and build team work while enjoying the beauty of number crunching.
No prerequisite skills required. All grades and levels welcome.
Here are some photos from our Mathletes workshops: a room full of grades 7 to 12 of our Ravens came out and attempted Waterloo Math questions out of their comfort zone. Every students got the chance to improve their skills with the variety of questions available to them and took home some new math problem strategies. More than 35 grades 7 to 12 students enthusiastically collaborating in numeracy problem solving; both listening and sharing each other's best tips for math contest problem solving. Students went half and hour overtime as no one wanted to leave.
