The College Board-endorsed AP Summer Institutes provide teachers with in-depth training in AP courses and teaching strategies. Participants engage in at least 30 hours of pedagogical and content rich training led by College Board-endorsed consultants and receive printed materials, including course outlines ; content -related handouts; and student samples, scoring guidelines, and commentary for the most recent AP Exam free-response questions. 

The Silver State AP* Summer Institute is offering the following AP sessions. Please note some AP sessions are split by participant's years of teaching the specified AP subject; this may be different than years of experience teaching. Please register according to the following requirements:

AP Biology

Instructor: Joy Killough

AP Biology - New

Joy Killough, a career science educator, has had the privilege of teaching science to people of all ages. Since 1992 she has taught AP Biology at a large suburban high school and currently at a small private school in Austin, Texas. As a College Board consultant since 1999 and an AP Biology reader, Joy has worked with science teachers throughout the United States and internationally. Her favorite part of this experience has been meeting inspiring teachers and exchanging teaching stories and lessons. Joy has been the recipient of national and state awards highlighted by the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, Texas Medical Association Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, and the Outstanding Texas Educator by the Texas Academy of Science. Joy embraces learning and continues to stay informed about science and education through work and formal training. She is a Past President of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers (TABT) and recently earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a science emphasis from Texas A&M University. Her research interests include science professional development, reforms in science education, and math-science integration. 

Instructor: Brenda Royal

AP Biology - Experienced 

Brenda Royal is a native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she attended Middle Tennessee State University. She received her B.S. with a double major in chemistry and biology, her M.S. in biology, and her Ed. S. in curriculum and instruction. She has 37 years of classroom experience having taught AP Biology for over 25 years. She has been a Tennessee Teacher of the Year Finalist, an NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher for Tennessee, and a Metro Nashville Teacher of the Year Finalist. She received the Siemens Award for AP Instruction in 2006. She has been an AP Exam Reader since 2003 and currently teaches in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She is an AP Biology consultant for College Board, Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation, and the National Math and Science Initiative and she enjoys serving as an ambassador for Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biointeractive. She served as the southeast regional coordinator and on the board of directors for the National Association of Biology Teachers, and she chartered the Tennessee Affiliate of NABT in 2016, serving as founding president. Her passions are ecotourism and her five grandchildren. She’s a dog person who was adopted by two farm cats, Thelma and Louise. 

AP Chemistry


Instructor: David Wentz

AP Chemistry

David Wentz taught public high school science and math in Arkansas for twenty-six years, including twenty-two years in AP Chemistry and eight years in AP Calculus AB. He holds a BSE in Secondary Education from the University of Arkansas. David was the National Math and Science Initiative’s Science Teacher of the Year for Arkansas in 2012.  Along with consulting for the College Board, he has consulted for National Math and Science Initiative as a presenter to AP Chemistry teachers at summer workshops and mock readings, to Pre AP Chemistry teachers at Laying The Foundation workshops, to AP Chemistry students in NMSI’s Initiative for Military Families, and to AP Teachers for Arkansas AIMS.  In addition to consulting, he has been an AP Chemistry Reader for ETS since the 2012 reading.  David has been married for thirty-seven years and has one daughter and one granddaughter.




AP Environmental Science

Instructor: Courtney Mayer

AP Environmental Science

Courtney Mayer taught science courses for 23 years, including AP Environmental Science for 15 years at Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas. She is a College Board Consultant for AP Environmental Science in the Southwestern Region. She has presented all over the United States and in China. Courtney is also a College Board consultant for Analytical Reading and Writing Strategies in Science, and is on the writing committee for the Pre-AP Biology Curriculum and a consultant for the College Board’s National Faculty and Cross-Curricular Instruction. Courtney was a reader and table leader at the AP Environmental Science reading where she scored free-response questions for thousands of students. She was honored in 2011 with the College Board's AP Award for helping to promote and continue the mission set by the College Board. 


She recently retired as the Director of Advanced Academics in Northside ISD where she worked with teachers in her district through professional learning and curriculum development in gifted strategies and advanced academics. Currently, she is the part-time teacher for the University of Texas High School for APES.  Courtney has published 11 books, all around science topics, particularly AP Environmental Science.


Courtney graduated with a degree in Wildlife and Fishery Science from Texas A&M University in 1992 and she received her Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University. 



AP Physics


Instructor: Michelle Strand

AP Physics 1

Michelle Strand has taught science for 31 years in Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota.  She has 26 years of experience teaching college-level introductory physics (including AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2 and Introductory algebra-based physics at a community college).  Michelle was recently selected as one of 15 K-12 STEM teachers for the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow by the Department of Energy.  She recently finished up an 11-month stint on Capitol Hill in the office of California Congressman Mark DeSaulnier working on National Education Policy.  Michelle served as Senior Reviewer for the AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 audits.  She was a member of the AP Audit Development Committee for Physics 1 & 2 as well as the AP Audit Development Committee for changes coming to all AP Physics Audits.  Michelle has been a part of the AP Physics reading for 25+ years as a reader, a table leader and Exam Leader for the B exam, C exams and P1 & P2 exams.  Michelle served for 6 years as high school co-chair for the AP Physics C Test Development Committee and she has been an AP Physics Consultant for 11 years.
