The College Board-endorsed AP Summer Institutes provide teachers with in-depth training in AP courses and teaching strategies. Participants engage in at least 30 hours of pedagogical and content rich training led by College Board-endorsed consultants and receive printed materials, including course outlines ; content -related handouts; and student samples, scoring guidelines, and commentary for the most recent AP Exam free-response questions.
The Silver State AP* Summer Institute is offering the following AP sessions. Please note some AP sessions are split by participant's years of teaching the specified AP subject; this may be different than years of experience teaching. Please register according to the following requirements:
New is designed specifically for teachers with 0-3 years of experience teaching the specified AP subject.
Experienced requires the participants have taught the specified AP subject for a minimum of 3 years.
Please understand that years teaching AP may be different than total years of teaching experience.

Syllabus: AP Biology - New
Joy Killough is a career science educator who has had the privilege of teaching AP Biology in and around Austin, Texas. She has taught in large and small schools, public and private schools, and rural and urban settings. As a College Board consultant and an AP Biology reader, Joy has worked with science teachers throughout the United States and internationally. Her favorite part of this experience has been meeting inspiring teachers and exchanging teaching stories and lessons.
Joy has received numerous national and state awards and honors, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, Texas Medical Association Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, and the Texas Academy of Science Outstanding Texas Educator Award. She is a Past President of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers (TABT).
Joy embraces learning and continues to stay informed about science and science education. She holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a science emphasis from Texas A&M University. Her research interests include professional development, reforms in science education, and math-science integration.

Syllabus: AP Biology - Experienced
Mark Little had been a science teacher at Broomfield High School in Colorado for 32 years and has taught AP Biology for about 20 years and retired at the end of 2018. He has been very involved with the AP Biology re-design, including and not limited to field-testing some of the laboratory investigations and helping with the new CED. Mark has been an AP Reader and Table Leader for over fifteen years at the reading along with being an item writer for the exam. Mark received his BS degree from Colorado State University and his Masters from the University of Denver.
Mark incorporates the new curriculum framework ideas in his workshop and his focus for his institutes is to help the AP Biology come alive for students He incorporates the information learned in his workshops and stays current using research-based, pedagogically sound instructional strategies. Mark is involved with the AP Biology Teacher community and offers help to teachers directly in these groups. Mark is a National Board Certified and has been recognized for his teaching by receiving various awards, including the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for the state of Colorado in 2005. Since 2014, Mark has lead AP workshops in Alabama, Arizona, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Washington and California. Mark was President of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) in 2013 and currently still very involved with the organization. In 2024, he received NABT’s highest award, Honorary Membership by being recognized for his teaching and service in the biological sciences. He enjoys reading, fly fishing and golfing and traveling with his wife in his free time.

After graduating from the University of Oregon with degrees in Biology and Chemistry, Dale taught Chemistry and Physics in Oregon at North Medford High School for 33 years. During this time, he wrote educational software for the Apple computer; had his own company, Chip-n-Dale Software; earned a fellowship position with Project Seraphim to write educational software for general Chemistry; coached tennis; and became an AP Chemistry Reader and consultant for the College Board.
For the past twenty-five plus years, Dale has been active as an AP Chemistry Exam Reader, Table Leader, and Question Leader. He has worked as a consultant for the College Board conducting weekend, week-long, and international workshops. In 2007, Dale was appointed and served on the SAT Chemistry Test Development Committee.
When he retired from North Medford, Dale was approached by Syracuse High School in Utah to come in for one year and revamp the Chemistry curriculum. In that year, the school saw a 25% increase in their end of course exam.
After moving back to Oregon, Dale was invited to teach for St. Mary’s High School. Being at a small private school means teaching many subjects - Anatomy/Physiology, First year Chemistry, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics.

Brad Allen is a CollegeBoard AP Physics Consultant who has taught AP Physics in the Rochester, NY area since 1998. He is also a CollegeBoard Consultant who has presented to a variety of groups, including the AAPT, the New York State Master Teacher program, and numerous AP Summer Institutes, both in-person and online. Brad has participated in the AP Physics Reading since 2012, most recently serving as an Exam Leader, overseeing the rubric development and scoring of several questions. As an AP Physics Development Committee member, he edits and finalizes the questions which will appear on upcoming AP exams.
Brad has also developed items for all four AP Physics Exams. He has written hundreds of multiple-choice and free response questions that have appeared on the AP Physics Exams, in the AP Physics Course Description, and in AP Classroom, while contributing to prominent AP Physics textbooks. He has published several articles in The Physics Teacher, the leading physics education journal, where he also served on the Editorial Board for six years.

Oather Strawderman has taught AP Physics at Lawrence Free State High School in Lawrence Kansas since 1997, where he is also the Science Department Chair. He has worked as a Question Leader at the AP Physics Reading since 2012. In addition to scoring the AP Physics exam, Oather is also an item writer and reviewer for the AP Physics 1, 2 and C exams. As a College Board endorsed AP Physics International Consultant, he has presented over 150 daylong and week-long workshops in 37 US states. In addition, Oather is honored to have had the opportunity to present International Workshops in Kunming China, Dubai United Arab Emirates, Ontario Canada, Shanghai China, Taipei Taiwan, Panama City Panama and Beijing China. He has also presented at multiple AP Annual Conferences, National Science Teaching Association Conferences, American Association of Physics Teachers Conferences and the College Board Forum. Oather served for seven years as the Co-Chair of the AP Physics 2 Development Committee where he helped develop the exam and worked on the preparation of the Curriculum Framework. He also was a member of the Rearticulation Committee that revamped the Curriculum Frameworks for all the AP Physics courses, including writing and reviewing the current Course and Exam Descriptions for all four AP Physics Courses. Oather trains other AP Consultants and mentors new AP Physics Consultants for College Board as the Lead Consultant for AP Physics. He is a Lead Instructor for AP Classroom, including presenting AP Daily and AP Review Practice Session Videos. And Oather also served three years as the Chair of the College Board Science Academic Advisory Committee for which he advised College Board on all things Science related.
