Literacy Lab- Grade 8

Course Syllabus: 2018-2019

Welcome to 8th grade Literacy Lab! This course provides small group instruction in reading and writing and is coordinated with the Common Core Standards and the Massachusetts Standards for Literacy. Eighth grade Literacy Lab addresses the rising writing demands in all academic subjects. Alongside direct and explicit reading instruction, this course includes informal writing experiences that support student’s ability to organize, develop and revise their writing. This individualized writing instruction and in-depth coaching is coordinated with the formal writing projects students are expected to complete in their core subjects.

Grade 8 Literacy Lab includes:

Direct instruction in domains of literacy: comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and grammar. All instruction and student goals are connected to the Common Core Standards.

Explicit modeling of reading strategies including close reading and critical thinking strategies to support comprehension.

Explicit instruction and guided practice of writing skills such as organizing thoughts before writing, expanding writing, adding details and evidence in written responses, and revising writing.

Systematic instruction in morphology (roots, prefixes and suffixes) and spelling conventions.

Vocabulary development

Independent reading and individual reading conferences will also be a regular recurring component of Literacy Lab

Ongoing formative assessment:

Reading level – running record assessments , Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)

Comprehension: SRI, QRI

Class Discussions

Informal Writing Assessments (Quick Writes, Classwork)

Formal Writing Projects


Grading Criteria

Quick Writes/ In- Class Writing /Writing Projects 60%

Class Discussions /Participation and Effort 30%

Independent reading 10%
