Number Line Practice

Number lines are visual math tools that build the foundation for mental math thinking. These are key strategies that I revisit all throughout the school year, so it's important for your child to learn to use them effectively. I've included an example at the top. The most important thing is to remember to notate what you are adding (which goes at the top of the jump), and what you are landing on, which goes at the end of each jump.

While a number line is just one of many thinking strategies that your child can go to in math, it is a very linear and visual way for students to build mental math thinking by helping them to think about how to add numbers in parts and evaluate the most efficient way to add the numbers together. There is no restrictions with a number line. I recommend that students start with the big number, but they are not limited to that. They are free to add however they want, as long as their outcome is accurate.
