Section 02: Motion in One Dimension

Goal: To explain the concept of relative motion and the difference between an object’s velocity and its acceleration.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

- explain the idea that motion is relative.

- define speed and give examples of units for speed.

- distinguish between instantaneous speed and average speed.

- distinguish between speed and velocity.

- describe how to tell whether a velocity is changing.

- define acceleration and give examples of units for acceleration.

- describe the motion of an object in free fall from rest.

- describe the motion on an object thrown straight up until it hits the ground, when air resistance is negligible.

- determine the speed and the distance fallen at any time after an object dropped from rest, when air resistance is negligible.

- explain why acceleration is a rate of a rate.

- construct a graph of the distance and velocity vs time for a moving object.

-use kinematic equations of motion to calculate and describe various aspects of motion.
