Topic 8 – Rotational Equilibrium and Dynamics

Goal: For this Topic, students will examine the relationship between torque and rotational motion. Both rotational kinematics and dynamics will be investigated.

Objectives:

• Describe torque and apply the definition of torque to elementary systems

• Define center of mass and note that only external forces can cause an acceleration of the center of mass.

• Identify the two conditions for equilibrium, and apply them to solve problems.

• Describe the relationship between torque, rotational inertia, and angular acceleration. Mathematically define the moment of inertia. Apply the rotational second law to physical systems.

• Define rotational kinetic energy and distinguish it from translational kinetic energy. Include rotational kinetic energy in the work energy theorem.

• Define angular momentum. Describe the conservation of angular momentum both qualitatively and quantitatively. Use the conservation of angular momentum to solve rotational motion problems.
