Topic 8 – Rotational Equilibrium and Dynamics
Goal: For this Topic, students will examine the relationship between torque and rotational motion. Both rotational kinematics and dynamics will be investigated.
Objectives:
Describe torque and apply the definition of torque to elementary systems
Define center of mass and note that only external forces can cause an acceleration of the center of mass.
Identify the two conditions for equilibrium, and apply them to solve problems.
Describe the relationship between torque, rotational inertia, and angular acceleration. Mathematically define the moment of inertia. Apply the rotational second law to physical systems.
Define rotational kinetic energy and distinguish it from translational kinetic energy. Include rotational kinetic energy in the work energy theorem.
Define angular momentum. Describe the conservation of angular momentum both qualitatively and quantitatively. Use the conservation of angular momentum to solve rotational motion problems.
