Topic 6 – Momentum

Goal: Students will use the principles of impulse and momentum to study the motion of bodies that undergo one and two-dimensional collisions.

Objectives:

  • Define momentum and impulse, and relate impulse to the change in momentum of an object through the impulse-momentum theorem. Calculate the impulse produced by a time-varying force.

  • State the law of conservation of linear momentum and show how its usage can be used to describe collisions and recoil.

  • Describe inelastic and elastic collisions. Apply the law of conservation of linear momentum to solve one-dimensional collision problems.

  • Apply the law of conservation of linear momentum to solve two-dimensional collision problems.

  • Calculate the force acting on a body over time as its mass changes, such as a rocket burning fuel.
