Topic 6 – Momentum
Goal: Students will use the principles of impulse and momentum to study the motion of bodies that undergo one and two-dimensional collisions.
Objectives:
Define momentum and impulse, and relate impulse to the change in momentum of an object through the impulse-momentum theorem. Calculate the impulse produced by a time-varying force.
State the law of conservation of linear momentum and show how its usage can be used to describe collisions and recoil.
Describe inelastic and elastic collisions. Apply the law of conservation of linear momentum to solve one-dimensional collision problems.
Apply the law of conservation of linear momentum to solve two-dimensional collision problems.
Calculate the force acting on a body over time as its mass changes, such as a rocket burning fuel.
