Advancement Policy

Our Battalion advancement policy is based on demonstrated knowledge and ability, not on position held. Only three Unit positions have a fixed rank associated with them: The Cadet Commanding Officer (C/CDR), the Cadet Executive Officer (C/LCDR) and the Cadet Operations Officer (C/LCDR). All other Cadets wear the rank to which they have earned promotion.

Cadets start at the grade of Cadet Seaman Recruit.

Promotion is earned, not given.

New Advancement Policy effective August 2020

The goal of the proposed policies is to ensure we are promoting people who fully meet the requirements of their rank. It is unacceptable to have higher ups not knowing standard knowledge. The requirements to advance are meant to build upon each other; a cadet must still meet previous requirements while also meeting new ones. Reading through the requirements will make this clear. We wanted a policy that was clear and made it easier to advance, while also requiring the basics of good conduct.

When

Cadets should sign up for advancement tests on the sheet provided by the Promotions Officer.

For advancement purposes, Unit Activities are defined as 1) participation in an NJROTC team, such as academic, color guard, drill, athletic, orienteering, or CyberPatriot, or 2) a community service event. Field trips do not count. A cadet who is currently on the roster of a GMHS sports team may count that for one event.
