Grading:
Students are graded on 3 standards:
- Performs by singing or playing classroom instruments appropriately
- Creates and/or notates improvisations and compositions demonstrating an understanding of the elements of music
- Describes, analyzes, interprets, and evaluates music using appropriate vocabulary
Students will be given a 1-4 rating on each standard using the same system from elementary school.
Topics Covered Include:
- Rhythms:
- Time Signature, Measures
- Quarter, Eighth, & Sixteenth Notes.
- Quarter note rests
- Be able to read, perform, and compose different combinations of rhythms stated above
- Be able to read, perform, and compose a 4 part percussion ostinato
- Notation:
- Be able to identify and understand the purpose of the treble clef and staff
- Know the names of the lines and spaces of the staff in Treble Clef
- Be able to sight read and perform different musical examples that include a mix of rhythm and pitch
- Be able to compose and perform original compositions using standard notation
- Song Form:
- Understand AB, ABA, and ABAC form
- Understand and identify Verse, Chorus, and Bridge
- Be able to analyze several different songs examples with song form structures
- Be able to improvise and compose original music guided by a set song form
- Instruments of the Orchestra:
- Be able to identify and understand the fundamentals of woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments
