For Grade 5
Students are graded on 3 standards:
Students will be given a 1-4 rating on each standard using the same system from elementary school.
For Grades 6-8
Specialists' Grading Table:
For all classes (Band, General Music, VAP) based on Wilson Middle School Grading and Reporting System. The "Number Grades" will be used in iPass and represent a "Numerical Value". Students will be graded in the categories listed below.
Work Habits (40% of Grade):
Work habits include a number of different factors. It primarily focuses on how the student works in class as well as at home. Our band classes are rehearsals and times where I teach new concepts. These classes are not time to practice instruments and students will be expected to do work at home. Students should set aside at least 15 minutes on 4 days to practice as this allows for practice to not have a huge impact on a student's schedule. More practice sessions for less time allow for more learning and consistency. Students may also be subject to playing quizzes in class in which I may ask students to play in pairs or alone to see that they are completing the work at home. These checks are a part of this grade. Additionally included is if students are taking rehearsals seriously and working hard during the time we have together. Effort is a key element. A student could be a not so great musician but do well in this area so long as they demonstrate that they are making adequate progress for their abilities. Here's the rubric for grading:
Preparation (15% of Grade):
First and foremost, students that have had me in the past will tell you that preparation is the one thing that I stress with everyone from day one. Preparation for band involves having all materials for every band class. Materials include: instrument, instrument accessories, music and folder (given to students by me), and a pencil. Students will be expected to have their instruments in school starting on the second "A-Day" of the year but are welcome to bring in instruments as soon as they have a locker assigned.
Students missing materials on a given day will not receive class credit. They will be given a grade based on the number of days they were prepared by comparison to the days they had class.
Tests (20% of Grade):
Tests will take place at least once if not twice a trimester. These will be announced in advance in class, via monthly newsletters and posted on Charms. Many assessments will take place using Charms. Students will be expected to complete these at home. If students don't have access to proper technology, they will be able to complete during class or they can meet with me after school. Students are eligible for retakes if done at home or after-school only. These will not be offered during class time.
Here's the grading rubric for this:
Listening Assignments (15% of Grade):
Students will be asked to listen to and assess their own class' performance at least once a trimester. Additional listening assignments may apply depending on the teacher's discretion. These will always be posted on the Moodle, announced in class, and announced in monthly newsletters. Here is how these are graded:
Concert Participation (10% of Grade):
Students are graded on participating in two concerts throughout the year. Students will not receive a grade on this 1st trimester but will for 2nd and 3rd. Please view the concert schedule to ensure that these dates are available. Students are additionally graded on coming dressed appropriately so please see the Concert Dress. Students who can not find appropriate clothes for the concert, should see Mr. Morrill at least one week prior to find clothes from our donations.
If there is some circumstance that will prevent someone from participating in a concert, my expectation is to receive a note from a parent at least 1 month prior to the concert so that an alternative assignment can be arranged. Otherwise, it is at the teacher's discretion as to if students are permitted to make up the missed points.
