MVL: Career and Technical Education (CTE) Registration Process 2024-2025
Beginning in the 2022-2023 academic school year, the MVL Board of Directors authorized participation in the career and technical education (CTE) courses available through ISD #88 and held at the Career and Technical Education Center or at New Ulm Public High School (NUHS).
Participating MVL students must be in their junior or senior year of high school and must take these courses as one of their elective courses. Graduation requirements for MVL take precedence over these opportunities.
MVL students (or their families) are responsible for transportation to and from the course(s) the student is taking. *Please note that due to travel time, some CTE courses will be in the place of multiple class periods at MVL.
MVL student absences that impact the CTE course(s) are the responsibility of the student and parents to directly contact/connect with NUHS. MVL will not pass on absences at MVL to NUHS. This responsibility lies with the parents. They should call the NUHS office directly at 507.233.6400. Communication must also be made with NUHS if a unique daily schedule at MVL will impact the student's ability to attend their respective course(s) at the CTE Center or NUHS.
MVL and NUHS have different daily schedules and their semesters do not typically align. This provides unique challenges, but through communication and being proactive, students can find success in these courses.
There are three parts to the CTE course registration process. Each interested MVL student must:
First schedule a meeting with the school counselor to discuss course options and ensure it fits into their class schedule.
Complete the registration paperwork required by NUHS (this can be obtained from Mr. Smith at MVL)
Inform/notify the MVL registrar (Mr. Nehls) that they are successfully registered and enrolled in a CTE course and let him know which course(s). This will ensure that the MVL schedule allows the CTE course to fit into the daily schedule.
Grades earned in CTE courses at NUHS will be transferred onto the student’s MVL transcript. The grading scale and policies for these courses will follow those in place at NUHS.
For fall courses, this process should be completed as soon as possible (during the spring semester), but for sure by May 15th. For spring courses, this process should be completed by no later than December 15th. Courses at the CTE Center and NUHS do have a limited number of seats available.
For each CTE course taken by a student, the cost reduction will be 6% of the student’s annual tuition. If a student takes a CTE course that is two class hours in length, then that class will count as 12% of the tuition. It should be noted that fees for co-curriculars and other activities are not included in this amount. Financial aid will be pro-rated respectively.
CTE courses offer MVL students the unique opportunity to take a multitude of courses, most of which are “hands-on” learning. A successful CTE course-taking student must possess responsibility, maturity, and be organized.
