Installing Eclipse on Windows
Download the latest version of the
Java Development Kit (JDK)
and the
Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
Make sure you choose the correct installers for your operating system and processor architecture.
If your computer has a 64-bit processor (it probably does), you want the
Windows x64
version
If you don’t know your processor type, select
Control Panel → System
and see what it says:
Run the JDK and JRE installers with the default options.
You will get a message whenever a newer version of Java is released. Don't ignore these; they are often important security updates.
After installation, you can verify your java version:
Open the Command Prompt and type
java -version
You should see output similar to this:
Connect to athena and copy the Eclipse installer to your desktop:
Hit
[Windows logo key] + R
to bring up the
Run
dialog
Type
\\athena.cs.mtholyoke.edu\Software\
in the text field
Make sure you use backslashes! Forward slashes won't work. This ain't Unix.
When the
Network Password
dialog pops up, type
ms\
plus your MHC username.
In the password field, enter the same password you use elsewhere on campus.
Right-click on the Eclipse installer archive and select
Extract All
Once the files are extracted, you can launch Eclipse.
You can set the Eclipse workspace directory to be the same one you use in the labs, to avoid confusion.
