how do I log in from my own computer?

You can connect to the CS server from any Mac, Windows, or Linux computer on campus, including your own. Your username and password are the same ones you use elsewhere on campus.

From a Mac:

  1. In the Finder, choose "Connect to Server…" from the Go menu, or hit command-K
  2. Type or paste in the server's address: smb:// plus your MHC username
    • example: smb://
  3. Type the same username and password you use elsewhere on campus.
  4. If you are asked to select a volume, choose the one that matches your username.
  5. When the server volume appears on your desktop, you can drag it into the dock or create an alias for future use.

From Windows:

  1. Hit [Windows logo key] + R to bring up the Run dialog
  2. Type \\\ plus your MHC username in the text field, followed by a backslash
    • example: \\\myUserName\
  3. Make sure you use backslashes! Forward slashes won't work. Windows ≠ Unix.
  4. When the Network Password dialog pops up, enter ms\ and then your MHC username.
    • example: ms\myUserName
  5. In the password field, enter the same password you use elsewhere on campus.
  6. If you are asked to select a volume, choose the one that matches your username.
  7. You can make a shortcut of your athena share for future use: open a new window, find your athena directory under Network, and drag its icon to the Desktop.

From Ubuntu Linux:

  1. Click on the Files icon in the dock to open a new directory window.
  2. In the sidebar, click on Other Locations.
  3. In the Connect to Server field, enter the server address plus your MHC username:
    • example: smb://
  4. When the password dialog box appears:
    • select Registered User
    • enter your MHC username and password
    • in the Domain field, type MS

The above steps will connect you to your home directory on athena. If you want to get to a different shared directory (such as Software), change the server address as shown:

  • on Mac OS: smb://
  • on Windows: \\\Software\
