Getting Started With Cloudera
Download and install the free
VirtualBox hosting environment
(whichever platform package is appropriate for your operating system)
Install the VirtualBox Extension Pack as well
Using your usual MHC name and password, connect to
smb://athena.cs.mtholyoke.edu/Software
/ (if using a Mac), or
\\athena.cs.mtholyoke.edu\Software
(if using Windows).
If you have trouble connecting,
see steps 2 thru 4 on this page
for the username & password syntax.
Download and decompress the pre-configured Cloudera virtual machine files (it's large! 5.7 GB file)
Start up the VirtualBox application
In the
Machine
menu, select
Add…
Navigate to the Cloudera virtual machine files you downloaded in step 5 and select cloudera-quickstart-vm-5.4.2-0-virtualbox.vbox
The VM should now appear in the left column of the VirtualBox Manager. Double-click it to start the VM.
The default username and password are both
cloudera
. Change the password to something else when you log in.
When you quit the VirtualBox VM, you can save the machine state for next time. It's faster than shutting down or powering down the VM.
