Homework Policy

Homework Policy

Ms. Altomer's Classroom • 4th Grade

Homework is a significant part of the educational development of every child at Pinewood Elementary School. Homework is a learning responsibility that must:

  • Be handed in promptly by due dates.

  • Show evidence of thought and learning.

  • Be neat and eligible with proper headings including their NAME.

  • Be orderly and completed.

If a student does not complete a homework assignment (without a valid written excuse from the parent/guardian), a "No Homework Slip" will be stapled in your child's agenda for the parent/guardian to sign. The student is responsible for returning that slip signed with the assignment in hand the next day.

Homework Expectations for Families

  • Students are expected to keep track of their homework assignments by regular use of the required agenda and have it signed daily by a teacher and nightly by an adult.

  • Students are required to read 20 minutes per night have a parent signature on the provided reading log.

  • All students are expected to review and correct their completed homework with an adult before bringing it to school the next day.

  • On Fridays, a Friday report, which will also include a progress report with your child's academic achievements and behavior along with their perspective on the progress of the week and their goals for the next week. Please sign and comment on this form and return the signed sheet on Monday.

  • Parent signatures are required on EVERY test that is sent home.

Rewards

  • Lunch Bunch

Students who complete all of their homework assignments with no slips home will be awarded with a lunch bunch celebration at the end of each month. Students are allowed the privilege of eating lunch in the classroom with the teacher and their friends for a fun celebration and recess time. They are also allowed the privilege of not having a teacher or parent signature in their homework agenda at night time unless otherwise warranted.

  • Homework Pass

After successfully completing 20 nights of homework, students will be rewarded with a "Free Homework Pass" to use anytime with one assignment in any subject.

Homework Requests

Please request homework whenever your child is absent. When out of school, your child will be missing a substantial amount of curriculum and hopefully they will be able to get caught up by the next day. I can send work home with another student or you can plan on picking it up after school in the office. Your child will have the same number of days to make up work as you have been out. For example, if your child is absent 2 days, your child will have 2 days to make up missed assignments. When your child is absent, don't forget to send in a written excuse for the office the next day. For planned absences, such as vacations, I will get together whatever work possible before your departure.

Life happens!!!! I know there are always extenuating circumstances that pop up and would inhibit a child from completing their homework at nighttime. Please jot me a note to let me know, and your child will be able to make up their work at another time and not have it count against them. (ex. death in the family, hospital visits, etc.)
