Data Distributions

IAbove and Beyond

The student will:

  • Calculate quantitative measures of center (median and mean) and variability (IQR, MAD) (6.SP.B.5c)

  • Describe patterns and deviations from patterns in data. (6.SP.B.5c)

  • Choose the appropriate measure of center and variability based on the shape of data distribution and the context in which the data was gathered.(6.SP.B.5d)

The student will recognize or recall specific vocabulary, such as:

Attribute, box plot, calculate, center, context, data, data set, deviation, distribution, histogram, interquartile range, mean, mean absolute deviation, measure, measure of center, measure of variability, measurement, median, numerical, observation, pattern, quantitative, shape, spread, surface feature, unit (6.SP.A.1, 6.SP.A.3)

  • Students will recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability. (6.SP.A.1)

  • Describe the distribution of a set of data by center, spread, and overall shape. (6.SP.A.2)

  • Display the numerical data on a histogram and a box plot. (6.SP.B.4)

  • Describe surface features of numerical data sets (for example, number of observations, how the attribute was measured, units of measurement) (6.SP.B.5a, 6.SP.B.5d, (6.SP.A.2)
