Congratulations to all of you who have chosen to be a part of AP Language/English 4 Honors! While this is a rigorous, college-paced class, please keep in mind that this is a course for your development as a reader and writer (and hopefully, your opportunity to earn some college credit).
This course aligns to an introductory college-level rhetoric and writing curriculum, which requires students to develop evidence-based analytic and argumentative essays that proceed through several stages or drafts. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Throughout the course, students develop a personal style by making appropriate grammatical choices. Additionally, students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods (AP Central, College Board, 2014). Students prepare for the AP English Language and Composition exam and may earn college credit. (Check with your college as soon as you are able.)
This course can seem a little daunting at first, especially for those who have not taken an AP course in the past. Please keep in mind, however, that students of varied backgrounds have survived the course, and most have scored a 3 or higher on the exam (on a 5 point scale). Also, please note that it is possible to get an A in the course while only getting a 1 or 2 on the exam.
I am excited to share this journey with you. Should you have any questions or concerns, let me know. I am here to help make this year at Marian successful and memorable.
