The bike has endured over 6000 miles since I started this trip. Being it is my main support system for this journey I am playing it very conservative, and so I must risk diluting the excitement of my exploits by telling you I spent Saturday as a passive observer of a BMW dealership while the bike underwent a 18000 mile service checkup.
The nice thing is that there is some uniformity in BMW riders. The local BMW club was serving pancakes at the dealership in the morning before taking off on a morning ride. I received welcome and advice as to how to best navigate the next leg of the journey, which is the trip to Key West and met some really nice people. Not a lot of native Floridians amongst the crowd. BMW riders being an older crowd, I met a lot of people who had retired to the state for the lower cost of living. As one rider put it, if you travel down the west coast it’s mostly Midwesterners avoiding the cold, if you travel the Atlantic side it’s mostly New Yorkers. The advice was to take the west coast route because the people are friendlier, which is what I intend to do…
