Today was the first Saturday of the trip, which obviously changes the pulse of life on a college campus. Instead of going my own way, the plan was to spend the day with family members, some of who are infirmed. When you reach a certain age and your physical body starts to give out on you the best you can do is get in the car and enjoy a ride which is what we did. I did not plan the route but by circumstances it was decided to take a tour of one of the newest CSU campuses Cal State Channel Islands located in Camarillo. This campus is brand new and still in development. From my academic perspective it was nice to see a campus, with nice facilities and environment, but not yet developed to be overly focused on sports or higher education brand image (Go Bears!!). The campus is set off from town by agriculture and nestled in the edge of the northern tip of the Santa Monica Mountains, giving it an oasis or retreat feeling. It’s nice to know as well that until a college develops to the point where it can ignore its core purpose (as many have, in my opinion) it must focus on
its educational directive. The newest campus building was a very impressive modern library (Go Librarians!!). The campus is architecturally unified in a Spanish style based on the original buildings at the site. Ironically the site where the campus is located and the original building there housed a hospital for the mentally ill. From mental illness to higher education may not be as far removed as we think….
