Ms. Haggin and Mrs. Becker
History has always played a key role in my life. I fell in love with History as a little girl reading the Little House on the Prairie books. When I was 11 years old I visited the College of William and Mary on a trip to Colonial Williamsburg and thought how lucky someone would be to attend a school like that. Seven years later, I was one of those lucky students, moving from the Bay Area to Virginia for college. After college, I began my teaching career in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, another key location in American History. In Boston I learned that teaching was not just a career, but a calling. After two years, I came back to California to attend the STEP program at Stanford, where I earned my masters in education. Once I graduated I joined LASD and I’ve been teaching US History at Egan for the past 17 years. I hope to inspire students to be active citizens and to help them see the connections between our past and our present. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy baking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
History is my passion and I am super excited to teach 8th graders and US History this year! I have been teaching for twenty-five years, usually some form of history from Ancient Civilizations to World History, and now I get to focus on US history. In my free time, I often find myself reading historical fiction, listening to history podcasts, or adding historical tours to my travel itineraries.
Before Egan, I taught in Japan, Sunnyvale and Loyola (LASD). I graduated from Miami University of Ohio and later got my teaching credential at SJSU. This will be my fifth year at Egan. When I'm not reading or learning about history, I spend my time hiking, doing yoga, and enjoying time with my family and our labradoodle.
I'm looking forward to creating a supportive learning environment in which students think deeply, become curious, and feel safe to share ideas.
