Interesting note about Entry 109 Catalpa

posted Sep 17, 2011, 7:15 PM by Tony DiGiovanni

Les Kadar submitted the entry prior to the Tornado.   Paul Thomas went to verify the entry and took a photograph after the Tornado.   Here are his comments:

"Just for interest, I was just running thru the slide show and noticed that for #109 Catalpa, Les Kadar submitted a photo of the whole tree prior to the storm and I submitted one of after.  They are almost the exact same perspective of before and after, and really shows the damage done by the tornado.  They both have wires in the shot, just below the leaf line. The tree removal people told them it was a twisting fracture and the rope is the only thing holding the main trunk from collapsing, in my photo."

Entries are coming in daily - new volunteers announced

The committee thanks  Jeff Thompson from Native Plant Source / Thompson Environmental
and Bill Ferguson from Home Hardware (head office) for stepping up to help with verifying the many entries we are receiving.    Phil Dickie commented " I'm really glad they'll be on board because I can see things getting a
little rushed coming down to the wire"
Also Cathy Thomas has also been a very busy volunteer helping Paul Thomas with verifying entries.  Thanks Cathy!

Important Announcement

posted Jul 15, 2011, 4:51 AM by Tony DiGiovanni

Please note the species and measurements of nominated trees are not official until verified so please continue to participate even if you think an existing tree is larger than your entry.  You never know.

It is also important to note that different species are naturally larger or smaller than others.   The prizes are awarded based on the largest tree within the species, so don’t be discouraged from entering smaller trees.   We would like to see all species nominated.
