  • PHS Alumni Association scholarship application is below. The complete application, with at least two letters of reference shall be submitted by midnight, April 15, 2022 in order for the student to be eligible.

DEADLINE: Complete applications, including letters of reference, shall be submitted electronically by midnight, April 15th, 2022.

The Powell High Alumni Scholarship award (minimum $1500), paid in two installments of ½ the scholarship amount for each of the first two terms of a four-year accredited University. Students attending a two-year college may apply and, if selected, will be awarded the scholarship within four years of high school graduation if/when they show proof of transferring to a four-year accredited University. A student must carry at least 12 hours non-remedial work each quarter or semester and have a least a 2.5 grade point average to receive money from the scholarship after the first quarter or semester.

Criteria: Candidate must….

  • Be a graduating senior and accepted to an accredited college or university OR accepted at community college, with intent of continuing education at an accredited four-year college after community college.

  • Must not have received scholarship(s) for more than 90% tuition in other scholarship monies, excluding the Hope Lottery Scholarship, nor attend at school for which costs for tuition/books/rooming is deferred.

NOTE: Incomplete Applications will not be considered. You MUST follow instruction in this package to maintain eligibility for the PHS Alumni scholarship. This is a blind application, and your ID number is 2022-SR-________, where STUDENT ID is placed in the blanks. DO NOT use name on any information submitted except what is on the first page.

Only electronic applications will be accepted, and the student name/identification shall ONLY be disclosed on Page 1 of the application. Names shall not be anywhere else in the application (including essays and letters of reference).

Page 1 of the application will be used to tie the Student ID to the student name AFTER scholarship selections are made.

Submittal of Application:

  • The application shall be submitted electronically and shall contain the following:

    • Page 1 of application.

    • Pages 2 and 3 of application, with student ID in top right hand corner.

    • High School Transcript with social security number but no name (hide name with white out, non-transparent tape, or another way that you choose – just make sure name is hidden. If there are multiple pages of the transcript, make sure your code (2022-SR-________) is used on the pages not containing your social security number.

    • Essay written by the candidate stating something about yourself and your plans for the future. (Again, DO NOT use your name/photo or any information that reveals your identity (name, address, etc) in this essay.)

    • Two letters of recommendation written/signed by non-family member(s). Letters of recommendation MUST refer to you by your code (2022-SR-________). Reference letters and file name SHALL NOT identify you by your name. CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

  • Powell Business & Professional Association Scholarship- PBPA Powell Business & Professional Association will directly award one 3 seniors (Class of 2022) of Powell High School a scholarship in the amount of $1000.00. This student must possess great character, potential and represent Powell High School as “Knoxville’s Best!” This scholarship is inclusive to all students planning to attend a degree seeking program at a community college or private/public 4-yr institution or a technical school including TCAT to major in Business, Health Care or Technical Skill Set.

Society of American Military Engineers: Who We Are and What We Do

During World War I, it became apparent that there was a need for our nation to access public and private sector engineers to support the nation’s defense. In 1919, the U.S. Army’s Chief of Engineers proposed the formation of an "association of engineers" that would preserve, and expand upon, connections formed in war and promote the advancement of engineering and its related professions. Subsequently the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) was founded by Congressional Act in 1920. The Society’s Motto was, “Dedicated to the National Defense”. Today, the Society has over 30,000 members from industry, military, academia and government. The Society’s Mission is, “SAME leads collaborative efforts to identify and resolve national security infrastructure challenges.”

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must comply with the following:

a. Be a citizen of the United States.

b. Be a current high school senior, eligible for admission to an accredited Educational Institution of the United States.

c. Plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.

c. Expressed intent to pursue a degree in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, as well as architecture, biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, geology, physics, etc.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

a. Academic Achievement/Grade Point.

b. Demonstrated leadership skills (extracurricular activities such as, community service activities, student government, athletics, band, scouting, other organizations, etc.).

c. Two Reference Letters.

d. Applicant’s written essay.

e. Geographic area: A resident of the surrounding counties adjacent to the greater Oak Ridge/ Knoxville metropolitan area.

f. Participation or interest in Junior ROTC program. (desirable, but not mandatory)

g. Participation in a STEM type organization (desirable, but not mandatory)

h. Financial need will be considered (explain per additional consideration section, page 4)

SELECTION:

The Tennessee Valley Post Scholarship Board shall utilize an evaluation plan to rate and rank all eligible candidates. Applications will be evaluated in three areas, which are weighted as follows:

a. 50% on consideration of documented past academic performance at the time of application.

b. 25% on demonstrated leadership and participation in school activities, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, and unusual personal or family circumstances.

c. 25% on involvement in volunteer community activities.


AWARD:

Scholarships will be $2000.00 for each eligible recipient and are designated for only one year of undergraduate study and are not renewable. Scholarships are to be used within the next academic year, unless there is a specific reason for the student to defer until a later time (i.e. volunteer service). Deferrals must be authorized in advance, and are considered on a case by case basis.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

As part of your application, please include the following documents:

a. A current, complete official transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

b. A Report of Test Scores (SAT and/or ACT), if not already included on transcript.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted. It is recommended that you print a hard copy of your application for your records.

NOTIFICATION

Applicants will be notified in May. Not all applicants will be selected as recipients.

PAYMENT of SCHOLARSHIPS

Distribution of funds will be made directly to the college/university on behalf of the recipient within 30 days of student registration.

Obligations

Recipients have no obligation to TVP SAME. They are encouraged to participate in the mentoring program offered by TVP SAME. Additionally, recipients are required to notify TVP SAME of any changes in address, school enrollment, or other relevant information and to send an official transcript when requested.
