At Greenfields, Maths homework is related to children learning instant recall facts. These cover addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If children become fluent in these facts, they find it much easier to calculate and solve a wide range of problems. Children are expected to recall the facts in less than 3 seconds for them to be considered instant.
Progression in Instant Recall
The following table shows the facts children are expected to learn in each year group.
Helping your child to learn maths facts
Encourage your child to use the facts they already know to help them; eg if I know 5+2 I know 2+5, if I know 7x3 I know 3x7.
Look for patterns; eg 2+6=8 and 12+6=18, the 4 times table is double the 2 times table
Children have different methods for memorising facts that suit them. Try out some of the suggestions below to see which suit your child best:
Repeating the facts out loud
Writing the facts down
Singing them in a song (there are lots on youtube)
Concentrating on just 2 or 3 facts at a time
Playing games (eg with cards, board games, on the computer)
Displaying the facts on a poster and reading it regularly
Remember to look on the maths page and home learning page for your child's class for links and ideas.
