Color guard aka “guard”, “flag”, “flagline”, and other variations is a non-instrumental/visual only portion of the band. During parades and on-field performance they learn routines that involves spinning (and sometimes throwing) flags and rifles. At times, no equipment is used and there are elements of dance that are utilized as well.
The short answer is the NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE is expected at all.
We just need people with a good positive attitude who are looking to learn.
We will teach the counting needed to understand the various routines and all of the technique needed to do what you need to do.
It is the one part of the band that is also open to ALL students - students do NOT need to be in an instrumental music class to participate.
You can show up to the first practice on Tuesday June 3rd at 5 pm. If you have questions, you can reach out to to Mr. Connell (pconnell@isd191.org). We would also love for you to fill out the interest form ahead of time.
This will be an opportunity to meet our staff, returning members, and new members.
We will cover some of the first basics of color guard and handing the equipment!
In June we practice only on Monday evenings and this is when we will learn some of the traditional material, including pre-game, parade, and pep songs.
In July we will practice on Mondays and Thursdays and start to add in the halftime choreography as that gets finished by our choreographer, Craig Thiltgen.
We hope to have a lot of material learned by Band Camp when we really join with the rest of the marching band.
