Topic: Food Crisis
We have enough food on our planet. The problem is it’s not getting distributed accordingly. In the United States alone each person on average throws away 4.5 pounds of food waste each day! On the other side of the world children in Uganda are stealing food in the middle of the night because that’s the only way their family can get fed. How can we work as a global community to make sure every country is getting the food that the population needs?
International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA)
Topic: Nuclear Disarmament of North Korea and Iran
Nuclear disarmament is the act of reducing or eliminating nuclear weapons. This would help prevent the start of a nuclear war. In 2008, North Korea produced 40kg of plutonium, which is enough for six to eight nuclear bombs. Iran is trying to import nuclear warheads from Russia. Do countries have the right to produce these weapons for protection? What solutions can you come up with to stop these weapons from being created?
Topic: Global Warming
Global warming is the increasing average temperature of both the earth’s air and ocean. This is supposedly caused by pollution from factories, natural gases (cars), and burning of coal. Many debate that this is the earth’s natural cycle of warming and cooling. While others debate that this change is highly unnatural. What does your country think and how can we help stop pollution, and make a greener planet?
New and Renewable Energy Sources
Topic: Alternative Energy Sources
Wind and solar power are great examples of alternative energy sources. Wind power produces no pollution that will harm the environment and since it is a renewable source of energy we will never run out. Solar power comes from the sun, so as long as the sun is still looking down on us, its energy will reach earth, and again, no harm done. What are other alternative energy sources and how can your country affect the use of these energy sources in out nation’s everyday lives?
World Health Organization (WHO)
Topic: Influenza Prevention
The flu is hard to prevent. If you can afford to get the shot, you are lucky. Many families around the world cannot afford a flu shot. In this fast-moving world, people are traveling more quickly and more often, making the spread of airborne viruses even more difficult to prevent. Now, with a new virus on our hands, H1N1, how can we ensure that the people around the world will be protected?
Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
Topic: Gender Equality
Around the world, women are treated differently. In some countries women have equal rights to men. In other countries, women do not have the right to vote, drive, marry by choice, own property, or even wear pants. Who should decide the rights of women? As a global community how can we work towards gender equality so that every woman has the same rights?
