During the 1800s, massive conquest of foreign lands permanently changed the social, political, technological, and environmental landscape of the world. In an effort to understand the causes and effects of imperialism students will take on various characters from this time period and explore the complex paradox of imperialism by hosting international tribunals to determine whether the empires violated international law by conquering other lands and if found responsible, should retribution be awarded the former colonies. The 9th grade will represent the conquered peoples and the 10th grade will represent the European colonizers.

2. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Redux: We Are All Alice
The stories that have defined our formative years often have important lessons about growing up. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is the classic tale where we begin our exploration. Throughout history this story has been told and retold using many different mediums to explore the themes. But why would the well respected mathematician, Lewis Carroll write such a strange children’s book where societal, mathematical and physical constraints are constantly being redefined? As a team, we will explore the hidden drama and messages behind this timeless story and the seemingly natural instinct humans have to tell stories to children. The team will continue its exploration by examining classic Greek, Chinese and African stories applying the tools gained from Alice’s adventures, concluding with us writing our own coming-of-age stories.
Lewis Carroll's First Edition - complete with his original drawings! (Thanks Erina!)

Names are used to define, classify, understand, and represent us. We will be looking at how names are used in different situations and how they can influence the development of an organization or individual. Since we will be working as a team for the entire year, we need a name that fits our team's identity and goals. In order to find a brilliant name that suits our team well, we will work in design groups to create a marketing campaign that sells our team name ideas and identity.
