Audobon Dream School OR XYZ
Students chose one of the two projects to participate in. Twenty students volunteered to help a first grade class create elements of their dream school. The other group designed their own experiment on a topic they wanted to know more about.
Battle Rockets!
Students built and tested rockets. Then we participated in a battle of the rockets by launching rockets at targets.

The Laws of War (April 30 - May 30)
After WWII, the United Nations set up an international court to prosecute Nazi leadership and soldiers for the heinous crimes committed. The Hague, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), was created. We will be looking at three modern conflicts: Israel/Palestine, Chechnya/Russia, and Yugoslavian wars. Students will choose the trial they are most interested in. Through each trial we will explore the international legal system and gain a better understanding of the complexity of international conflicts.
Model United Nations (April 9 - 24)

Survival 2013 (March 11 - 22)
Our team received a grant to travel to the Philippines to share project learning with the Marist School located outside Manila in a city called Marikina. We were told to bring supplies for the projects but food and other essential materials would be supplied. With over 3,000 miles to cover the flight was to take 22 hours and 30 minutes! Leaving San Diego at 9:35pm our team was scheduled to arrive at 11:04am in Malia two days later after changing planes twice and going over the international date line. At 5:35 am on the second day with the morning light just beginning to appear, we were awakened by Noah Parr screaming, “Balloon Man....Balloon Man!....Look!” By this time we had gotten used to Noah’s habit of screaming extremely random things in his sleep. We ignored him and tried to get back to sleep but this time it was different. Without further warning the plane banked steeply to the left while our stomachs floated from the sudden descent. All of a sudden Cookie comes screaming down the aisle appearing to be chased by a poorly secured beverage cart yelling “we are all going to die!” Then the noise, a screech, a series of pops then silences. Everything else is cloudy after that until we wake to the sounds of crashing waves and the excited calls of seagulls that seem to have gathered around Grace who is arranging sea shells on the waters edge. The “project” begins here.
You must work together to complete a series of tasks that will determine your chance of survival. One of you has a camera that you will document your (trials and tribulations) adventure to show the world what you experienced. Hopefully you survive and are able to show this video first hand - if not, at least the world will know what happened. Each day will bring new challenges so it will be imperative that you are prepared. Your group will depend on you and you will depend on your group.

Survival Challenges
March 11, 2013: First Challenge
It is now two days later and morale is running low. Your group (of 3) is worried that survival will be harder than originally thought. In an effort to raise hopes your group decides to pretend it is on a survival show. Name your survival group, identify a logo that will represent you all, and create a catchy slogan that you can chant when times get tough.

March 18, 2013: Third Challenge
It has been a week and the survivors are becoming overwhelmed and anxious with each other. Tensions are rising and are manifesting through snappy arguments, sarcasm, and in some cases, physical fights. Your survival group must show us how calm you can remain under pressure. At 1:00 we will begin our first series of debates. The conversations will revolve around human nature, The Lord of the Flies, and The Butterfly Revolution.
How points will be allocated:
You receive points for wisdom, communication, bravery, and collaboration
Using evidence from the text will boost your scores
Making connections between texts, real life, and other books will also boost your points
Possible Discussion Questions:
1. If you could take one character from the book with you for a survival situation - which one would you take and why?
2. Discuss the symbolism that has been referenced so far in the book. Identify an object that keeps coming up in the book. What do you think it represents? Why?
3. How does the author view human nature?
4. What most surprised you from the book? What was the most interesting?
5. Which character best represents how you would act in a survival situation?
6. Using the human nature philosophers: Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Voltaire, Astell - how would they discuss these texts?
7. In what ways is human nature being explored throughout the books?
A World WithoutWhat would the world be like without books? San Diego county is hosting a “Big Read” event of the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. We will be looking at the complexity of this story through a variety of lenses: historical, scientific, thematic, figurative language, and character development. The 1950s were a time of strange paradoxes. On one hand happiness and conformity ruled, while on the other hand, the world was on the brink of disaster with subversive elements hiding in all corners of society. We will explore these topics in depth as we reach a deeper understanding of our own lives with or without our favorite things.
Throughout history, individuals have attempted to predict the future. Leonardo Da Vinci predicted the submarine and helicopter long before they were invented. Jules Verne illustrated air conditioners, skyscrapers, and vehicles. We are challenging ourselves to predict the future with our careful analysis of the past. It is the year 2050. As a team we have identified a series of issues that have become our "IT." Forecasting the future of how our "IT" will evolve through time and predicting how physics and technology drives the trajectory of this project. Life, as you know it, is gone...
