Fluency

Fluency in reading is very important. Once students can read quickly and automatically, they can concentrate on the meaning of what is being read instead of just the sounds in the words. This is when comprehension and independent learning takes place.

The following is the range of fluency standards for 2nd grade:

*wcpm= words correct per minute

Please practice reading with your child each night to raise the level of words read per minute. Students can practice fluency by reading the decodables at www.sraimagineit.com. Have your child read and reread his/her favorite books. Reading to your child also builds fluency; you are modeling what fluent readers sound like.
