Papers from the 7th World Congress of Korean Studies 제7회 세계한국학대회 발표

The Seventh World Congress of Korean Studies, held at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa in November of 2014, featured a special session on the language of Jeju Island, at which five papers were presented--two in English and the others in Korean. Three of the papers, by Changyong Yang, William O'Grady, and Sejung Yang, represented joint work. However, for practical reasons relating to the conference format, each bears the name of a different single author. The authors explore different aspects of Jejueo, but all three agree that it is an independent language.

A fourth paper, by linguist Dr. Soon-Deok Moon (문순덕), then-director of the Center for Jeju Studies at the Jeju Development Institute (now called the Jeju Research Institute), outlines current and future plans for preserving Jejueo. At the same time, however, she takes the position that Jejueo is a variety of Korean rather than an independent language, reiterating the traditional view held by many Korean linguists.

The fifth paper, by TV producer In-Chang Kang (강인창), offers a brief summary of the efforts made by the Jeju Island KBS station to cover and promote Jejueo-related activities. It has been translated into English.
