Jejueo--Language or Dialect?
제주어: 언어인가 방언인가?
Traditionally, Jejueo has been treated—both by linguists and by Korea's Ministry of Culture—as a dialect of Korean rather than as a separate language. But what determines whether a variety of speech is a language or a dialect? Members of the Jejueo Education Research Committee explore this issue with the help of an intelligibility experiment in their paper, "Revising the Language Map of Korea," which can be found on the page entitled "Why Jejueo is a Language."
