NJROTC COURSE SYLLABUS

Introduction

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the qualities of citizenship, the elements of  followership and leadership, and the value of a scholarship in attaining life goals. Students will become familiar with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Navy in general and the NJROTC program in particular. Cadets will develop a sense of pride in the organization  through accomplishment. 

JROTC’s mission is to “To instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment (National Defense Act of 1916)”. 

Eastside’s NJROTC Unit’s mission is “To empower students/cadets to continue education and achieve personal and team goals by providing an environment to develop leadership, confidence, discipline, and learn skills to become great American citizens. 

Course Overview

First year Students will prepare for this course by using the following text books:

Naval Science 1: Introduction to NJROTC, followership, leadership, organizational skills, time management, and team building.

Cadet Field Manual – Uniform regulations, awards,  military customs/ceremonies.

Students will be required to learn and become proficient in close order drill, athletics and followership.

Students will be required to perform physical training. 

Activity Fee

$50.00 yearly activity fee is due by September 3, 2023  Fee covers tailoring for shirt and pants, Brasso, name tag, shirt stays and awards for academics, physical training, air rifle, orienteering and end of year awards.  Please make check payable to Eastside High School NJROTC. 

Physical Training Gear

Shirt and short cost is $25.00.  Unit issued PT gear and non issued sneakers are required for all cadets on PT Friday. NJROTC travels to athletic events in Florida and unit PT gear is required to participate in those events. 

Uniform Inspection

Uniform inspection is conducted on Wednesday for regular classes and either Wednesday or Thursday for block classes depending on which day you are required to come to class.  Shoe polish must be obtained by the cadet to shine their shoes. Dry cleaning is preferred with heavy starch. Shirt stays are required for all males and grooming standards adhered to. 

Testing/Homework

Test and quizzes will be given during each nine week grading period.

Homework should be turned in on the assigned due date.  Late work will not be accepted. 

Classroom Participation

Students will be required to participate in all classroom activities.  This includes close order drilling and dressing out and participating in physical training on days when either one is assigned. 

Final Examinations

According to school policy, each student is required to take a comprehensive final examination worth 20% of the semester grade. 

Grading Policy 

All grades are calculated using the following weights: 1.Participation 20% which includes a. Uniform Inspection b. Drill and c. Physical training. 2. Tests 20%, 3. Homework  20%,  4. Leadership 20% and  5. Navy Core Values 20%. Leadership and Core Values are assessed every Monday using the Rubric.
