Speech and Language

General Information

The Glastonbury Public School system provides school-based speech and language services as outlined in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). These services fall under the broad umbrella of "special education" programs. Students may receive speech/language services as their special education program or as a related service in conjunction with specialized academic instruction. Students require an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) prior to inclusion in special education. Students who are eligible for services must demonstrate a speech and/or language impairment based on evaluation results, demonstrate that the impairment adversely affects educational performance and meet state guideline eligibility criteria as set forth by the State of Connecticut Department of Education, Speech/Language Guidelines.

School-based speech and language pathologists (SLP) provide services for students who qualify for speech and language services. Speech-language services may be provided individually or within small groups depending on student need. These services may take place within the regular education classroom or within a resource room setting. Speech and language goals and objectives may address improving communication skills in several areas including: speech articulation, speech fluency, voice, expressive language, receptive language, and pragmatic language. Speech and language objectives and lessons are linked to the curriculum when appropriate. Speech and language pathologists also consult with teachers and support staff to provide specific communication strategies for students.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s speech and language skills, please consult the SLP at your child’s school or the school's administrator. The list of SLPs within the district is provided on our home page. For concerns regarding preschool students, please contact the Special Education Department at 860-652-7972 to register for a preschool screening.
