Special Education Services

The Glastonbury Public Schools follows state and federal mandates to provide special education services to students. There are 14 distinct categories under which a child can receive specialized instruction. The State Department of Education (SDE) has developed rigorous guidelines to assist a Planning and Placement Team (PPT) in determining whether students are eligible for services.

Placing a student in Special Education is a significant decision requiring a thorough examination of data from student response to scientific research based interventions, curriculum based assessments, and in some cases, standardized tests. In order to prevent over-identification and assure appropriate placement, the SDE has supplemented guidelines with worksheets to guide the process.

Should the team determine that a student is eligible for special education services, the Planning and Placement Team meeting (PPT) creates an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This legal document clearly outlines the student’s learning profile, and contains goals and objectives for learning. These goals and objectives are addressed through specialized instruction, and in some cases, related services. In addition, the team defines the accommodations and modifications necessary for the student to access the general education curriculum.
