Introduction
I always think of this component representing a shift in the Design Thinking process. Whereas the first two components were focused on understanding the problem, Ideation is the beginning of your response to it! For this component, you get to be as creative as possible while imagining all the different potential solutions to the problem. One belief I have about Design Thinking that particularly impacts Ideation, I think, is that there are often MANY SOLUTIONS to a problem, so don’t ever feel pressure to come up with the “right” answer. With Ideation, have fun, be wonky, strive for creative, and arrive at innovative!
Design Thinking Objective
Students will engage Ideation by selecting and using an annotation technique and then sharing their experience with the class.
EdTech Objective
Students will use an annotation tool to share their thoughts, ideas, and responses to one or more web-based articles about Ideation along as well as digital sticky note boards to document and share their experience with Ideation.
Module 4 Activities
4.1 – Complete a FlipGrid post and record a response to at least one classmate
4.2 – View one or more curated videos on ideation
4.3 – Annotate an article about ideation
4.4 – Share your ideation by posting an image
Directions:
Complete this FlipGrid post to share your ideas about ideation techniques. Ideation is a key component of Design Thinking, and the key to ideation is having some brainstorming strategies at hand for you to use. For this FlipGrid post, you are asked to share your go-to brainstorming techniques. How do you like to brainstorm? Do you generate lists? Draw images? Use a mashup technique? Something else? Do you like to brainstorm by yourself or bounce ideas off others? Please share at least one brainstorming technique and a story of when you’ve been successful using it!

Ideation is an opportunity to put forward creative responses to the wicked problem. When I think about ideation, it’s not about exploring the options, it’s about exploding with ideas! After you “explode” with your ideas, then it’s time to explore and converge around a few ideas that you (and your team) think have the highest potential for success in your given context. With the goal of exploding with ideas in mind, check out some of the YouTube videos shared below. They were selected because each of them offers specific ideation strategies.

Now that you’ve had a chance to view some videos about ideation, let’s continue looking at strategies! Below are the links to three web articles that suggest brainstorming and that are linked to Hypothes.is, a website annotation tool. You are to annotate each article at least twice! One annotation must highlight something you found “useful” in the article, and your annotation must explain what about it that you found useful. The second annotation must include something in the article that makes you curious, such as a question you have or a point that you found disagreeable. You do not need to add your name to the annotation.
To Use Hypothes.is
First, you will need to register with Hypothes.is (don’t worry, it’s free!) using this link. Once you are registered you’re set to begin annotating.
To annotate with Hypothes.is, all you need to do is highlight the text, and a box will appear that includes an “annotate” and “highlight” option. Choose the “annotate” option and a box on the sidebar will open. You can then type your comment in the sidebar box. (Please note, you may need to login again to annotate, depending on your computer’s settings.) The name you used to register will automatically be included in annotation.

Now that you’ve read about some ideation techniques, pick one and do it! Generate as many ideas as you can! As you generate them – by yourself, with a partner, or small group – document the ideas in some way on a Note.ly board! (You will need to signup for an account.) Once you’ve documented the ideas on the Note.ly board, please share the link to your board on this Google Doc. That way, we can share our ideations with our learning community!
